“A child miseducated is a child lost.” ~John F Kennedy
Youth who have aged out of the foster care system arrive lost and alone at RWJD. RWJD offers them the support, food, and opportunity to get a GED because a high school diploma is the bridge to their future. According to a September 10 article in the AZ Republic, without a high school diploma these youth are only eligible to work in the lowest-paying and lowest-skill jobs. Even the military is not a career option.
In January 2014, the youth at RWJD faced one more hardship: the cost of the test increased from about $85 to $120. These youth are already below the poverty level. Now, many of these youth cannot take the test – not because they haven’t overcome every obstacle and prepared diligently, but because they cannot afford this test and also afford basic human needs like shelter and food.
Your donation, however, removes one of these struggles; the food that you donate each month make a difference in their lives – you not only ensure that they have a guaranteed meal, but you are also helping them save for their GED, for a successful career, for their future. As one youth writes in a thank you note:
“I want to say that these donations help a lot of young adult to keep going and finish their goals and dreams. I want to let you know a little bit about me and my life. I’m a strong girl always trying my best to complete my goals. Your donations really help people. I’m so glad I have these people that always help me out. Because your helping me TODAY I will help others TOMORROW.”
