Hello
When I think of November, I envision preparing a Thanksgiving feast for my family and friends who will then sit around my food laden table and enjoy their meal. Unfortunately, this is not a reality for all Americans. According to U.S. News and World Report, on Friday, November 1, $5billion in cuts to the nation’s food stamp program went into effect, meaning low-income Americans will soon receive less government assistance to put food on their tables. This translates into a family of four receiving $2.85 per meal.
A social worker at RWJD told me that: “This cut in food stamps will impact the lives of the youth at RWJD because when youth are hungry and not eating healthy meals on a regular basis, their ability to maintain good grades in school or attend work dutifully is compromised.”
I’m hoping that we can collect a record number of food this holiday season simply by each of us asking our guests to bring 3 food items in lieu of a hostess gift. Also, suggesting this idea to other people who are having parties can really help our efforts. I have an informational flyer about RWJD with requested food items that I can email to anyone who would like to include it with their invitation. I can also provide a box to place outside your front door for the food collections at your events. Please email me for more information and/or questions.
A big Thank You to Congregation Beth Israel’s Chanen Preschool / Families Giving Back Mizvot Event in October that collected over 500 cans of food. It was heartening to watch the preschoolers proudly packing the food and carrying it to the cars. Please visit their website: familiesgivingback.org .
I would also like to thank the Jewish Community Association Women’s Philanthropy Ignition Luncheon who requested donations of soup on the event’s invitation. The guests at the luncheon responded overwhelmingly to this request.
Unfortunately, according to Gina Harper, the Director at RWJD, there is a growing number of homeless youth being served by our pantry. Your kindness and generosity is very much appreciated.
Happy Thanksgiving
Holly
