Hello!
Just the other day, I came across the term “food insecurity” in an article about youth who have transitioned out of the foster care system. I was curious. What exactly does this concept mean and how does it relate to the Real World Job Development program and J3T.
Food insecurity describes the lack of food accessibility for the youth population at RWJD. The USDA defines it to be when “consistent access to adequate food is limited by a lack of money and other resources at times during the year.” The Texas Food Bank provides the similar explanation, “acceptable shorthand terms for food insecurity are hungry, or at risk of hunger, and hungry, or faced the threat of hunger.”
But now, thanks to everyone’s monthly food donations, the youth at RWJD have food readily available at the J3T pantry: they have FOOD SECURITY!
In other recent news, thanks to a generous donation from Discount Tire, the RWJD staff will teach the youth how to be smart food shoppers (e.g. coupon clipping, ad match, size-to-price ratio, etc.). Then, they will all enjoy a grocery store field trip to practice these skills and buy food with the donated money. RWJD wants to thank Lisa Ormsby, an employee at Discount Tire, who was able to obtain this donation.
This month’s food request: 3 cans of beef or cheese ravioli.
Thank you,
Holly Packer
